Wave Tank

Carbon Masters Society

This time the Carbon Masters Society visited the University of Edinburgh’s very own Wave Tank on Tuesday the 29th of April. We were shown around this world leading facility by Stuart Brown the chief Executive Officer of FloWave, a subsidiary of Edinburgh University tasked with managing the facility. The large steel clad building that greets you on arrival at the facility houses a 25m diameter tank holding 2.4 million litres of water. The tank is ringed by 168 absorbing wave makers and has 28 submerged drive units capable of creating currents of 1.6 metres/second that when fully powered draws a hefty 1,000,000W of energy from the grid. This amazing machine is able to test a whole variety of marine installations with the primary goal of better testing renewable energy systems such as tidal, wave and floating wind technology.
